Secure energy independence, reduce electricity costs, and generate extra income by installing solar pumps under the Government of India's flagship KUSUM Solar Yojana.

The Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM) is a transformative scheme designed to ensure energy security and double the income of Indian farmers. Its primary goal is to replace expensive diesel pumps with eco-friendly solar pumps and promote renewable energy in agriculture.
Under this scheme, the government provides a massive subsidy (up to 30-50%) for installing standalone solar pumps and solarizing existing grid-connected pumps. Additionally, farmers can utilize their barren or fallow land to set up Solar Power Plants (up to 2MW). This allows farmers to generate free electricity for irrigation and earn extra income by selling surplus power to local DISCOMs.
Real-time progress of PM-KUSUM Scheme
Launched by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), the PM KUSUM Yojana is a visionary scheme aimed at ensuring energy security for farmers in India. The scheme promotes the use of solar energy for agricultural needs, reducing dependency on diesel and grid electricity.
By adopting Kusum Solar Yojana, farmers can not only irrigate their fields during the day with reliable power but also earn additional income by selling surplus power to the grid.
The scheme is divided into three main components to cover different farmer needs.
Setting up of 10,000 MW of Decentralized Ground Mounted Grid Connected Renewable Energy Power Plants on barren/fallow land. Farmers can lease land or set up plants themselves.
Installation of 20 Lakh standalone solar agriculture pumps. Ideal for off-grid areas where electricity is not available. Heavy subsidy provided by Central & State Govts.
Solarization of 15 Lakh existing Grid-connected Agriculture Pumps. Farmers can use solar power for irrigation and sell excess power back to DISCOMs.
Earn by selling surplus electricity to DISCOMs.
Daytime power for irrigation without diesel costs.
Reduces carbon footprint and prevents groundwater exploitation.
Reliable power ensures timely irrigation for crops.

"Replacing my diesel pump with a solar one was the best decision. I no longer worry about rising fuel prices, and my crops get water on time."
Rajasthan
"I installed a small solar plant on my barren land under Component A. Now I sell electricity to the government and earn a steady monthly income."
Madhya Pradesh
"The subsidy made it very affordable. My farm is now green in every sense—no pollution, just clean energy and better yield."
Gujarat
Understanding which pump fits your water source is crucial for efficiency.
Best suited for water sources where the water level is less than 10 meters deep.
Designed for deep wells or borewells where the water table is below 10 meters.
DC Pumps: More efficient for smaller solar setups, connect directly to panels.
AC Pumps: Better for higher power needs, work well with existing grid connections or large solar arrays with inverters.
Farmers in Madhya Pradesh can avail significant subsidies for solar pumps. The MP Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (MPUVNL) oversees the implementation.
Uttar Pradesh Agriculture Department invites applications for solar pumps. The scheme helps UP farmers reduce diesel expenditure significantly.
